Boosting backplane densities for high-throughput applications

By
Luan Nguyen

Feature / Discussion: May 2007As evidenced by a growing number of OEM design decisions, 10 Gigabit Ethernet successfully meets bandwidth requirements for demanding backplane applications such as IPTV, video on demand, and wireless video. Single-chip switching solutions with high port counts offer a cost-effective way to deliver that high throughput bandwidth. New 20-port 10 GbE switch chips now coming to market dramatically improve backplane density, while minimizing both cost and power consumption. Luan describes how a representative 20-port switch chip enables new features and applications, and details implementation opportunities.
