
While wireless carriers around the world continue their efforts to achieve the full potential of 3G networks, 4G looms on the horizon. This Portelligent Tech Perspective provides an overview of developments related to fourth-generation networks and handsets in Korea and Japan. The analysis gives an account of the relative status of competing technologies LTE, UMB, and WiMAX, together with such regional variants as "WiBro" in Korea and the transitional "Super 3G" in Japan. The impact of activities at Intel and Qualcomm on 4G-related initiatives in Asia is summarized. In addition, the authors provide commentary on the definition and initial development of 4G cellular handsets in Japan and Korea.
