Are you warmed up for the 40G race?

Your customer just called and wants to begin rolling out a 4G network by the middle of 2010. Are you ready to deliver?

To date, NEPs have been able to leverage 10G AdvancedTCA application-ready platforms from the COTS ecosystem to reduce their time-to-market and costs, as well as lower their development risk. As the industry looks to transition from 10G to 40G to support higher bandwidth applications, NEPs must be able to make their 40G technology decisions today and be ready to ship thereafter.

Get set for deployment by first evaluating the benefits of an integrated 40G AdvancedTCA platform solution.

A 40G ATCA platform is comprised of a chassis, backplane, node blades, and hub blades, all integrated to meet next-generation network requirements. When evaluating a potential 40G platform solution, one of the most important criteria for NEPs to consider is investment protection. There are many 1G and 10G AdvancedTCA platform solutions available in the market today, and a new, 40G platform must be backwards compatible with existing blades.

NEPs also need to consider the components that make up the platform and their associated functionality. The 40G backplane must have full connectivity to all of the node slots that support 10G KR as well as 40G KR4. The hub switch must be capable of delivering both 10GBASE-KR and 40GBASE-KR4 switching to each of the node slots. And finally, the node slots must be able to support next-generation packet processing and CPU processing capabilities.

The RadiSys ATCA 4.0 initiative targets the deployment of network elements and scalability for next-generation networks. ATCA 4.0 is an integrated 40G platform designed to support the next generation of high-bandwidth applications such as LTE, WiMAX, DPI, and Mobile Video. The fully integrated ATCA 4.0 platform features the latest technology in the industry, incorporating 10GBASE-KR and 40GBASE-KR4 capable backplane and 40G switching capability.

RadiSys ATCA 4.0 products provide the highest scalability and density possible in an AdvancedTCA form factor with a 4x performance improvement in both switching and processing capabilities over 10G components. These fourth-generation AdvancedTCA platforms combine a 40G chassis, a 40G switch, and other 10G and 40G assets in a preintegrated platform that enables the deployment of next-generation 4G applications such as LTE and WiMAX.

Enhanced per-slot power and cooling capability along with true 40G backplane connectivity are features of the chassis. The 40G switch increases I/O density and native 40G switching to the node slots. With its decision to reuse the switch management software, RadiSys has made consistent API access available to developers, thereby make reuse of any development with the existing 10G switch possible. Additionally, RadiSys will be expanding the switch management capabilities to include a node router, which eliminates the need for the standalone router that would typically connect an edge device and the transport network. The next-generation ATCA 4.0 platform (Figure 1) builds on RadiSys' existing success with 10G applications and infrastructure with deployed applications such as 3G wireless, IMS, IPTV, and miscellaneous gateways.

Broad ecosystem supports 40G

Building on integration, the ATCA 4.0 platform includes, in addition to complete and comprehensive platform validation, backplane and thermal validations with the 40G switch and chassis. ATCA 4.0 platform software integration includes switch management, Linux, and middleware.

Deep engagements and upfront robust integration and test with ecosystem partners allows RadiSys' customers to significantly reduce development risk and time-to-market. Partner solutions include AdvancedTCA boards and mezzanines, operating systems, system manager, high availability middleware, virtualization, datapath software, various signaling stacks, and a range of pre-sale and after-sale services to complement RadiSys offerings.
